Some of those melodies sorely tempt the rewriting of lyrics! We have a whole version of Mairi's Wedding based around the fact that our adopted collie has never really learned that two people can't be in exactly the same place at once...

I suppose that Christmas doesn't end till Twelfth Night so I still have time to do *something*...
Wow - pure genius! I was thinking that today was my last chance and now I have almost two whole weeks of procrastination opportunities. Fantastic.
And just to prepare the ground, excuse-wise, we are having all new windows and doors fitted between Christmas and New Year, which will be very disruptive, and will be away for the night of the 31st (we are going to spend the night on the boat so will probably be too cold to play anything for a day or so afterwards).

I have almost two whole weeks of procrastination opportunities. Fantastic I told you - I'm the road to hell full of intentions and excuses! all new windows and doors fitted between Christmas and New Year Arghhhh! Actually, it isn't *that* bad compared with things that you can have done... But it turns every room upside down unless you have a windowless cupboard somewhere. I say that, because I once knew an academic whose research group met in a windowless cupboard... Anyway, once the windows are fitted you have remedial decorating so that will keep you out of mischief for a while and give you a whole batch of excuses for which I will sympathise! We stuck our greenhouse together with sellotape and so far so good... when I say 'sellotape' that's a bit of an exaggeration but not much. I'm not expecting it to survive to next season in fact, I'm surprised that it lasted this long. Mr Z is very much more optimistic about such things. He explains the physics to me but I'm not impressed and sadly more often that not reality defies the physics... However, I'm finding it hard to concentrate (harder than usual) as I keep going outside to see if it's still there...

I always find it surprising when trades people such as window fitters work between Christmas and New Year...doesn't seem to happen in England...everything shuts down and then people get bored so what do they do....they go shopping in the sales....as though the shops weren't full enough of people before Christmas and of course there are the traffic jams on the major roads leading to the retail parks. Much better to stay at home and use the extra time for music practise.

It's extraordinarily difficult to get anything much done where we live. The windows, would you believe, have been manufactured in Poland by a Polish company and will be installed presumably by Polish workers who are happy enough to just get on with it. We found the company via personal recommendation from a friend who says that her windows were installed very quickly and efficiently by a team whose nationality she never worked out, just not Irish. We are expecting it to be very disruptive of course. It's not particularly cold at the moment - 13° is we were driving home at about midnight last night - but it's wet and windy and not going to be great. Fortunately they are starting on the 28th so we've got the 27th to get everything ready. Not looking forward to it but we are expecting that going from single glazing (with far from airtight frames) to triple glazing should make the house a good deal easier to keep warm. So I won't be cold while patching up the damage to the plasterwork

patching up the damage to the plasterwork That's the spirit! It probably won't be that bad. We ended up painting bits (and I 'finished' the wooden sills which had to be fitted but the fitters did some plastering after they'd finished. It's warm here too and horrendously windy... I'm tempted to say: the most windy ever (because everything on the internet is always 'the most whatever, ever...' but it isn't the windiest it's been. I'd rather have still and frost... Anyway, you won't have to have windows fitted again! And good windows make a huge difference to a house.
