It is rare that two people play the same piece although it has happened to me a couple of times but this was at the Clitheroe group rather than Morecambe Bay. The first time a younger person wanted to play the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight sonata. When it came to my turn I had a go at playing the second movement rather than first.
The second time when I thought I had a clear shot at the first movement only to be eclipsed by a more experienced player with the same piece a few minutes later. He did apologise but wouldn't hear of my suggestion to follow with the second movement. It didn't say much for his greater experience, imho.

I'm genuinely going to make a start on some sort of carol activity soon - we are away for a fair chunk of November and if I wait until we get back I won't have time to do anything difficult. I like the idea of opening the basic carols book on Christmas afternoon - the tunes are indeed mostly simple and predictable and don't really need rehearsing. Something calming on Christmas day would be a good thing. We have reluctantly invited our neighbours over, mostly because they made it pretty unavoidable. That sounds a bit uncharitable for Christmas, but they are extremely hard work because they seriously don't like each other and just argue all the time. They are a father and daughter and they are both quite nice individually but together are extremely hard work. We had brunch with them last year on Christmas day and it was grim, so we decided this year we would avoid a meal situation completely and have them over in the evening and get them playing games so that hopefully they will be too occupied to bicker. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now I think they will bicker anyway and it will be a stressful way to end the day. I might have to do some late night calming carols!

Oh dear. They sound problematic. Can't you play hide and seek (where they need to be quiet). Or have competitions to see how long you can all hold your breath? Or apple bobbing! Perhaps find some really calming music to play all the time they are there... keff I guess that will happen occasionally. I wondered if it was more likely at Christmas - say - when people might want to play Christmassy music... I know I would!

They don't like the same music, so that would be an opportunity to argue about what sort of music is calming! Anyway, daughter never actually listens to music, just talks all the way through it

I've removed my Christmas music from the music room and looked at some. A wave of enthusiasm washed over me.

The first of November was the day I intended to retrieve a Christmas carol book and can now confirm 'A Jazzy Christmas (book 2)' has been opened on the piano. Unfortunately there is only one that I fancy learning at the moment and that is The Coventry Carol. I have more Christmas books still stored away but many of these contain arrangements which can be played at sight. There are two possibilities which do need some practise, Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and Johnny Mathis When a Child is Born.

This is totally but I'm availing of your "permission" of a few days ago...
Your expression reminds me of one of my favourite poems (this does not say much about my literary taste) which is loosely translated from an anon (yes, another one by him/her) in The Greek Anthology:
As I read Decline And Fall, A wave of boredom crossed my mind. I hurled the book against the wall, And left it fallen, and declined.
I have felt that a bit about some of the Christmas music I have looked at!

Well, I'm sorry about the feeling but not about the poem which has made me laugh. Re off-topic - people meander in conversation and do asides so off-topic is a slippery beast. We decided against a coffee lounge because some forums have members who never get out of the coffee lounge. But here are excellent forums out there who 'excuse' the meanderings as they know it consists of social glue. If anyone every wants to do a totally off-topic then there's the section under 'forum notices' - for people who have - so to speak - got their feet under the table. You don't even have to pretend to be on topic there. But honestly, I repeat - meandering is fine. It's glue. If this forum suddenly goes to over a hundred people posting each day then we might have to rethink but the probability of that one is so slight that I probably have a better chance of playing recorder with the LSO...

@keff - I too like Coventry Carol. One of my fave Christmassy songs is A Spaceman Came Travelling... and I do have a version for the recorder... not sure what I'd make of it just now though...

Oh...can't remember A Spaceman Came Travelling so just listened on YT. I am reading cosmologist Fred Hoyle's autobiography at the moment and also the odd wiki article on the "big bang" theory so it is rather apt.

How's it going? The carol thing...

How's it going? The carol thing... I quite like the version of "When a Child is Born" but not too sure if Sleigh Ride is an authentic piano score. Will have to research the latter. The jazz version of The Coventry Carol shouldn't take much revision. Last year was asked if I was prepared to play the carol tunes at the Salvation Army Christmas service but was stood down when the regular player was able to do it. Need to think about that as a possibility!

I think some of the Christmas Cards we bought from the Ernest Tomlinson thingy were all Sleigh Ride. I'd be interested in hearing what a jazz version of the Coventry Carol sounds like! It's all medieval and sonorous. I'm intrigued by that! Do you mean someone got a score for a alpine horn (or something) and just added some chords? Our teacher used to play for the Salvation Army -she was one of those people who if you stuck an instrument in front of her she'd make it sound nice. She had a lot of fun - she played euphonium I think. But eventually, she decided she didn't want to play that kind of thing any more and she decided to stick to piano (and organ).

Should have said 'not arranged to be easier...' . Have just seen the version published by Mills which looks to be Anderson's own arrangement and it doesn't look hard. Just have to decide how to get a copy...if I send to Prestomusic the cost will no doubt double because of postage.
