I saw the Gorecki performed in a concert, probably two or three years BC (Before Covid). I know the music well because I've got the CD, but it was a very different experience watching it live. I hadn't appreciated until I saw it how the music for one of the movements started off with just one section, then other sections came in, then it died back to just the one section again. It was very powerful. Having heard The Armed Man done to death on Classic FM, I've recently succombed to buying a couple of Karl Jenkins CDs. I've only just discovered that it was commissioned by the Royal Armouries to celebrate the Milliennium, and that it was dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis.
Another modern composer who many people enjoy is Einaudi.

I sang in a choir for a while (not well - it was one of those "anyone can join" choirs) and its standard work was The Armed Man so I too am a bit fed up with it. However, I should try some of his other work. I probably have TAM on CD somewhere but nothing else by Jenkins - I threw out the Soft Machine stuff years ago
I don't know Einaudi at all. Just looked him up and he's done a fair bit of film and tv music, but not for anything I've seen. Which I suppose means: youtube.

Mr Z has some piano works by Einaudi. He says it is interesting to play. I've heard bits of Primavera and liked it a lot. I can imagine he'd be snapped up by film and vid game makers.
edited to say, I hadn't heard of Einaudi either so I too am grateful for the mention.

'I Giorni' is another nice tune by Einaudi. Interesting fact; Einaudi's grandfather was president of Italy after the second world war.

Le Onde is another of Einaudi's most popular pieces.

Right Il Giorni went on the list along with Passagio performed on the harp. Thank you! Mr Z showed me his music books of Einaudi - there are lots of notes... I have an hour to spare today! And Mr Z took a tumble yesterday and hurt his thumb so he won't be using his piano...

Hope Mr Z's thumb repairs quickly. All this talk of Einaudi has encouraged me to seek out my one and only book of his music to crash through I Giorni but perhaps do a little bit better with a very comtemplative adagio he calls Limbo. I replayed Limbo and also made a recording...can post if there is interest.

I want to carpet the sitting-room so that he'll bounce better - it's woodblock floor and rugs but he says no. The thumb is arthritic so already sore. But he's well enough to sling a ball for a collie so... I'd love to hear the piece if you don't mind!

Einaudi's Passagio and I Giorni arrived this morning. I'm currently listening to Passagio - it's on the harp and it's really beautiful. Thanks again for those of you who mentioned him. Mr Z saw I Giorni and recognised some of the pieces (it's a piano version) and he said it was a good choice! So, I have to pass that on as it wasn't my choice!

Zi, was it the album I giorni arriving today? If so please let us know which other pieces you like. Yes, it is the album. Ditto Passagio. The harpist is Lavinia Meijer. I've taken Il Giorni downstairs for us to listen to together as Mr Z is keen to hear it. It's me who's interested in harp. I'll tell you what we think! edited to add - Passagio on the harp is beautiful. It's a bit like those really expensive box of chocolates - you have no idea how to choose the best one! I am aware that it's no real test of a composer though because even tuning a harp sounds wonderful!
