I clicked on the link and a mouthpiece came up and I thought for a moment: it just looks black to me, not that much more sparkly than any other. Then I scrolled down the page. Wow! Which colour did you opt for? I think the green looks particularly subtle

I got the green one. The music stand in my study is green. I like the red one too. But I thought I'd buy this and see how I get on and if it doesn't work out try a Yamaha. But the reviews seem to think it's a good choice for beginners. Why do manufacturers expect people in their 60s and 70s to be grown up?

I tried a few of my teacher's mouthpieces and one of them stood out as giving a much better tone.
Those sparkly ones are amazing!

Definitely the one I would have chosen!

I'm glad that other people are equally sparkly attracted! I'm looking forward to seeing if there's a difference.

>Looks fantastic! Yes! >Does it sound any better? No idea! >Do you care?? No! It looks fantastic! I think it's like those Japanese researchers who found that cars drive better when they've been cleaned!

I think you need to be properly serious about this - no point getting a Versace dress and wearing it with trainers.
This is fairly elegant and wouldn't cover up too much of the green. But this has other charms!
A fiberreed would help to complete the ensemble, but if you are really serious about the clarinet, I think you will need one of these

Absolutely love the red ligature. I did look at some because somewhere I read they make a difference. I have a Bari reed but it's black and it wasn't as expensive as that red one probably because it isn't red! There's lots to be said for a gold ligature to match the sparkly! It's a shame my playing doesn't match the stylish look! Now, if somewhere there was the silver bullet that turned me into a reasonable player then that really would be worth having! Actually, anything above terrible would be worth having!

I think the new mouthpiece has made a difference. Mr Z said that the notes have a shape now. I asked him if they had a good shape but he was non-committal. -ish but I did a recording of When The Saints etc this morning. I was pleased because I felt some sense of closure which lasted just until I realised I hadn't switched the microphone on...

I think the new mouthpiece has made a difference. That's good - it's always disappointing (don't ask how I know this) when you buy a new thingy that is supposed to really make a difference - and it doesn't. -ish but I did a recording of When The Saints etc this morning. I was pleased because I felt some sense of closure which lasted just until I realised I hadn't switched the microphone on...[/quote] Recording yourself can be maddening. I think you said you have tried Ardour? If so, you might have noticed that you have to enable record both for the track and the session; if you stop or go backwards or whatever it disables record for the session, which I often don't notice until after I have got to the end of the piece. Yesterday I also thought I needed more gain on the microphone pre-amp because it seemed quite low volume and the last thing I'd recorded was clarinet. Of course, it was some other issue so the gain was too high and the audio was terrible, lots of clipping. Excuses, excuses and all that, but worrying about what is going wrong actually makes me play even worse than usual when I'm trying to record myself. On recorder, I now set it all going and play a couple of notes just to check everything seems to be working, then take a couple of breaths before starting, and then chop all that stuff out when I've finished. I've been doing a bit of recording myself playing clarinet with a backing track recently so it's harder to do that.

Ardour... that is a name to conjure with... I'll start a thread under recording tomorrow and explain my woes!

Absolutely love the red ligature. I did look at some because somewhere I read they make a difference. If you haven't seen it before, this is an interesting video about ligatures - seems more honest than many:

Do you want to start a thread and move(?) this vid there? It's absolutely wonderful! I'll add it to resources... If anyone wants to know about ligatures this will be a great vid to watch and it'll make them smile! edit: Absolutely love the t-shirt. I so want one like that! edit again: Apparently old clarinets do get made into lamps!
