Do you save versions? I know when I was writing, I liked to compare versions and to see the crossing out. I just wonder if the same thing happens with music. However, I have to admit that I ended up using a word processor (and thus saving multiple versions) because it was so much quicker and easier and it didn't waste paper...
How's the composing coming along?

How's the composing coming along? No, I don't save versions as I don't really need to. The composing is done but now I have to learn to play the result. That's harder...

Do you ever change things in the light of learning to play the piece?

Do you ever change things in the light of learning to play the piece? No- I have written some truly awful to play stuff in this piece, but it's how I want it to sound, so I have to learn...

It sounds very rewarding. I really like the idea of a composition competition where people actually play what they've written. It's a nice idea!

It's amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. I love hearing people play and hearing an own composition is really special.

I think it won't be my last I certainly hope it won't! I'm sure it will give much pleasure in the listening and the playing!

Thanks... Although this is ostensibly for a "competition", I realise I don't care what happens next- if I "win" I get a £10 gift voucher or something like that, and the piece gets performed by a professional pianist. Well I already have an Amazon gift card balance of more than £10, and I already have a credible recorded performance of it which is professional enough to me. (And I'm the composer so I get to decide if it's professional enough, so there) As far as I'm concerned I've already "won".
It's also given me quite a lot of perspective on performing and analysing music. There have been times when I've wondered if certain musical elements were intentionally arranged in a way to be musically interesting. If the composer's process is like mine, the answer is; not necessarily"- I found myself sticking things together that sound good to me, but only later on do I realise it's counterpoint or inverted or some previous theme transformed.
As for performing. I often feel like I am cheating when I don't execute technique perfectly, like if I use the pedal to join certain notes that are awkward without it. I feel like I'm not being true to what the composer wanted. But now that I'm the composer I find myself doing this all the time and it sounds fine. Therefore it can't be that bad.

I was also thinking about why I compose. I think it's because the piece in my head is like an itch I have to scratch, I have to get it out of my head. Once it's out of my head and I'm satisfied with it, I don't care if it ever sees the light of day in any other way. I don't care if anyone plays it, I don't care if anyone likes it, it's just something for me to play to myself and look at and be happy that I created it. It's similar to how I view my performances, if someone else likes hearing it then that's great but mainly I play for myself.
This is interesting because that's not how I feel about other things, like if I cook a nice meal then I am happy that others enjoy it.

I've said before that your attitude is the best way to see things. I really struggle over the music thing though - I've more or less backed myself into a corner over it whereas other things I do, I'm more philosophical over and because I never see them in terms of failure, I've improved a lot faster...I think in the case of composition, the fun approach is to have the 'itch' and to be your own judge. I'm very very glad you shared it. I listened a few times and each time heard more.It definitely paints pictures for me.
I was going to ask you about having other people play your composition. Has that happened to you much? I can imagine it might be extremely interesting to see how they interpret what you do.

Has that happened to you much? I can imagine it might be extremely interesting to see how they interpret what you do. The only time I've had others play my music was in university. I suppose the best example was with the orchestra piece being performed. That was largely interpreted by the conductor, whose musical opinion I respect extremely. I am still in touch with him today. With him conducting it was this magical ability to improve what I had written, making it better in ways I hadn't thought of. Everything else we wrote in class was also read by either faculty or other students, but when you hear something at the first reading, there's no time to think about interpretation.

I write a fair amount for piano - I've amassed a bulging ring-binder of slightly dodgy salon music. Keep meaning to do more with it, but I'm such a ham-fisted pianist, peforming and recording is a real struggle. Typical example: soundcloud.com/david-breslin/waltz-in-a-1
