The top of my piano is extremely cluttered. It's a major exercise to clear it when the piano tuner comes.
- Three brackety-things holding music books, mainly sightreading, studies and scales. Music books of pieces to play are mostly in a bookcase.
- Another brackety-thing holding miscellenous notes, eg info on periods of music, theory etc. - Metronome. - Two hygrometers. Seeing as one says 50 (optimal, but veering towards dry) and the other one says 70 (borderline damp), I probably ought to get a third one to find out which one is most accurate - Abacus. I use this when I want to practise a particular bar (or whatever) X number of times. - A box holding bits of paper with a different scale on each, so that I can pick a scale at random to practise + envelopes with scales sorted into which are secure, which need more work, and which I haven't yet tackled. - A box holding several different coloured highlighter pens which I use on the score. - Bookends holding a notepad which I take to lessons, and on which I jot down any questions I want to ask. - Digital tuner, which I've only ever used for the clarinet but it's convenient to keep it on the piano. - Two framed photographs, unrelated to anything connected with the piano, but it's nice to see them when I sit at the piano. - The landline phone charger, which has nowhere else to go. There's no room for anything else.
Pencils and rubber are kept on the piano shelf.
I'm interested to know what (if anything!) is on the top of your piano

Contrary to the impression in my photographs we are not minimalist home makers...the sewing room is not photogenic by any means and the sitting room is full of bookcases.

I don't have a piano to have anything on top of it. I feel seriously left out! I'm glad you decided to join in and cease lurking! >- Digital tuner, which I've only ever used for the clarinet but it's convenient to keep it on the piano Zi's italics! Ah ha!

I've got a framed picture of my dad sitting at his extremely cluttered desk at work.

If I had a piano, it would have a steadily growing pile of "stuff" on it. When I couldn't stand it any more, I'd put it all away and it would look fantastically neat for a couple of days, and then the pile would start to re-grow.
Evergreen: I'm seriously impressed with your level of organisation. My system is much more basic. I have quite a sturdy music stand so things I'm playing now or have played recently are on it. When it gets too full, I shift things into a pile in a nearby drawer, and when that fills up things get moved to a bookcase that's in a different room. The things on the bookcase tend to stay there for quite a long time because I go through a process of thinking "I must have a go at X. Can't find X, it must be on the bookcase. I'll do X tomorrow." I have a plan to do something about the bookcase situation but it's been germinating for about 4 years now. Under the current scheme, my scales, for example, are distributed between the drawer (occasional efforts made) and the bookcase (can't be bothered at all).
I bought the optional accessory shelf for the music stand, which is quite spacious, and contains... a pencil and a rubber.
I have got a light on the stand though so at least I can see what I'm supposed to be playing.
That's quite a long post really considering I don't qualify to reply to this thread!

I think it's perfectly acceptable to say what would be on one's hypothetical piano!

Mr Z's piano has nothing on it except headphones. This is remarkable as Mr Z is horrendously untidy and he covers any surface he comes across with stuff. He's been banned from putting stuff anywhere that isn't his designated areas; and myself and our collie don't go into those designated areas. Me because I'm sensible and she doesn't because I've asked her not to - I'm scared she'll never re-emerge. I'm not sure what I'd put on a piano if I owned one. I have a chest for recorders and on that is recorders! I'd absolutely love to have an acoustic piano again. Before lockdown I saw a few I'd have loved to rescue but Mr Z is less keen. Given my propensity for collecting recorders I think he's worried I won't stop at one... And he's not as good at banning me as I am at banning him!

I'm now working on the contents of my hypothetical conductor's podium, after which I'll be considering my composing hut!

Mrs keff is also good at filling surfaces; her desk and a spare bedroom where we keep the sewing machines. She is less tolerant about filling work surfaces in the kitchen.

That's quite a long post really considering I don't qualify to reply to this thread! That made me laugh, so thanks for posting your contribution!
I didn't realise that other people wouldn't have the same amount of "clutter" on their piano as I did, I thought I was normal
If it wasn't on the piano, it would only be somewhere else, and then it would be in the wrong place!
