You were playing for only a week in the kind of timespan that it takes me to get the harness on and assemble the clarinet! I'm surprised you got to the point you did! I've been playing the clarinet for about a month and honestly there are days when you'd think I'd never seen one before! Actually, most days are like that. I hope you enjoyed doing it. Mr Z says he may have a go at the Irish flute... but not until his thumb is less throbby. So, we've inspired at least one person! Maybe...

Wonder if I should take a look at the grade 1 violin syllabus and set the next challenge to study it within one year. No intention of taking an exam. PS. I'm a crotchet (not to be confused with crochet)

I use the exam syllabus for recorder (and clarinet) but have no intention of taking exams. I think it's a great idea as it gives you something to aim at. If you continue now, you'll be about 3 or 4 weeks behind me - we could post where we get to on Jan or Feb 2024! Who knows, we might be debuting at the barbican by then... PS. I'm a crotchet (not to be confused with crochet) Welcome to crotchetness!

I am tempted to sign up to 10 minutes each day with the violin throughout the month of February, although realistically some days will have to be missed. I am not going to worry about that. I will continue using the Eta Cohen book 1 but not stay on one piece for too long.

I don't try to make up the missed time either.

My thumb is struggling. My face is struggling. Today I got the harness on myself and my husband said 'it would do'... which I assume means it was all squiffy. My husband is not good at being critical. The harness is a nightmare. The clarinet - when I get a nice note - is nice but it takes so long to swap between notes that I have to play really slowly... no slower than that...and slower than that... Realistically, 15 minutes is heaps long enough for me and I suspect it's more than enough for my poor husband. The good news is The Collie has given up singing along... I am wondering if the clarinet is for me and maybe I should try to play one of the other instruments I bought and can't play... My husband says all instruments are difficult to start with - even the comb and a piece of paper. He hasn't explained when 'to start with' stops being 'to start with'... But the good news is I'm now very good at putting it together and taking it apart!

If you are achieving some nice notes albeit slowly, you will become quicker.

I hope so or I could stick to very, very slow music! Played in a jazzy way! I've found a simpler version of When The Saints etc... which I might try. I've also found a version of Twinkle Twinkle as a duet. I'm suddenly all enthusiastic!

Oh...calamity! I mistaking tried to tighten the E string of the violin last night and now the peg won't hold. I removed the string and peg to apply Hidershine paste but it made no difference. Wondering if this is going to impose a pause in my challenge schedule?

Oh no. I presume that it is repairable?

Thanks Zi. It will fix, it is just having the know-how. The E string is the easiest to break!

I had to look at a diagram of the violin to see which one it was and then I was surprised at how few strings violins have. I'd forgotten! I'm now seriously impressed with violins. I hope it gets better soon.

Violins allow access to two octaves without much difficulty but going any higher it is necessary to move the left hand up the neck into what is known as third finger position. Wouldn't be going anywhere near this at the moment.

May I join you both in the challenge? I have a secret yen to play the horn, but time and finances (and probably stamina) don't allow, so I'm contenting myself with (re)learning clarsach. The snag is when it needs tuning - with 34 strings to tune, it does take a while...
I have replaced two broken strings, tuned it once, and practised it once! I need to get better.

We'd love you to do that! And if you're going to do that, I'll tune my 26 string and join in too. I can't possibly be any worse at that than I am at the clarinet! Can I?
