pavane was saying elsewhere that he loathes Christmas piped music. I've been thinking about how music gets used and what its purpose is under the various circumstances. presumably the Christmassy music is supposed to fill you with Christmas cheer and encourage you to spend. As I've explained elsewhere my unpredictable immune system means we don't go anywhere except for walks locally. We don't go into shops or shopping malls or restaurants so we're not assailed with it all. The last time I heard piped Christmas music was at the optician's in December 2022. Before that, it would have been before lockdown. I play computer games and music figures largely there - a couple of my favourite modern composers write for video games. It's there to create atmosphere - and at its best it really does. Some of it is very catchy and very clever and it adds to the atmosphere. But I have vague recollections that some of the piped music I've heard in the past sounds very synthesised and is a long way off being atmospheric. I just wondered what the rest of you think? Do you dance down the shopping aisles to White Christmas or singalong? Or does it really irritate you.

I can't say that Christmas music has irritated this year. I went shopping to Sainsbury's this morning and can't even say if music was playing. I do remember earlier this year I visited Morrisons and they were playing horrendous pop music. I asked the fishmonger if he got fed up with it...the answer was affirmative.

It's the pop music stuff that really gets on my nerves - not so much because it's awful per se, but because it's so ubiquitious and inescapable in certain environments like shopping malls and clearly intended to just put you in the mood to spend!
