Not quite sure if this is the right place for this or if indeed there is a right place. Anyway, we've had a couple of lime trees pruned as they were reaching into the sky rather alarmingly. I didn't realise just how light lime is. It's been drying since the start of the year and the off cuts are now really light. I've probably noticed this more since the equivalent in ash tree wood is extremely heavy. I suppose the weight of the wood needs to be taken into consideration when making a wooden instrument.

Maybe! I'm not generally a subscriber to the idea that "better" wood gives a better sound in a woodwind instrument in general, or a recorder in particular - at least, if it does, it's only one of many factors. However, from a purely mechanical point of view, light wood would be great in terms of not having to hold up a heavy instrument. I've never heard of anything made of ash, but whether that's because the wood has other problems, is not commercially viable, or I simply haven't heard about all the top quality ash instruments out there, I don't know.
You could test the possibilities by making an instrument out of your offcuts of course!

You could test the possibilities by making an instrument out of your offcuts of course! A friend once talked about lathes and wood turning and my best friend told him not to encourage me as he thought I was better with all fingers attached... Lime is meant to be very easy to work with which is why it was (and still is) used for carving. However, 'very easy to work with' is somewhat subjective...

I believe the keys of my piano are made of lime, also known as basswood. Meant to be straight grained and stable. If I remember correctly the action is made of hornbeam.
I have just noticed a webpage which says lime is good for musical instruments.

Re lime - I can confirm the straight grain. I didn't know they made piano keys of lime... that's very interesting... I didn't know hornbeam got used like that either. That too, is interesting!
