Helen Hooker has mentioned creativity in her latest recorder newsletter. But actually I wondered if anyone had a strategy for when things are past the creativity use by date and they've started to go off...

they've started to go off... What are we talking about here, Zi? Going off a piece of music currently being learned (i), going, off a piece that can be played well but now fed up with it(ii) or going off playing an instrument altogether (iii)? (i) Lets assume the piece being learned is liked but practice isn't getting anywhere. With piano I find that choice of fingering is often to blame so I sit at the piano with the score and work out a better fingering. It almost becomes an intellectual challenge which often rekindles interest. Slow practice striving not to play a wrong note helps too. (ii) Let the piece go as it can be revised at a later stage with less work. (iii) Is this because we feel we aren't getting anywhere or not the best use of our time? I can hardly contemplate the latter since trying to play is so beneficial for wellbeing. But if the former and we really do like music that we can make ourselves it comes down to perseverance, the fact that learning to play is a long term goal. Learning any instrument can be a lonely occupation so communications with like minded people is important. One reason that I suggested learning something that can be recorded and merged with a recorded accompanist part. In my opinion creativity does not say adieu but whilst we are still active it might transfer from one form to another.

In my opinion creativity does not say adieu but whilst we are still active it might transfer from one form to another I like that! It's the glass is half full and in any case someone will top it up again soon! I've stopped seeing playing as a 'must do' - I play when I want to. I'm trying very hard not to concentrate on having to get better and just play for play's sake. I've said before, all the other things I do, I do with a spirit of adventure and fun. But music sometimes can really get to me and I feel useless at it.

Is it worth considering renaming the forum in terms of people who make music and do other crafts? Would then need another section adding.

There are ***so** few people here that I'd support anything that the very few people want... I'd love to hear more about your cabinet making activities!
We could start a thread and also have name suggestions. We'd be stuck with the url but I doubt many people take any notice of them.
I did wonder if I should suggest closing this down as there are other places for all of us to go but it's not actually doing any harm and the discussions are really interesting. I have the spammers sorted in fact very few get through Proboards system in any case (it's pretty impressive) so it's not like looking after this is onerous... But I'd close if that's what (the very few) people want.

My vote would be to keep the forum open. Yes there are other places but agree about the discussions.

My vote goes for staying open too - for what it's worth. But I've belonged to some very small forums - as small as this one. So it doesn't bother me to see it small. I've belong to some truly massive ones as well. I've made a Hobbies board... we can label, rearrange, delete as appropriate. Let's give it a month or so and then see what people think... We could have a vote using the poll thing

I also vote for staying open. And I think the Hobbies board sounds interesting - look forward to reading it!

To return to my first comment when things get a bit 'jaded' for me I tend to leave it alone until I have this huge urge to do something about it... mostly it sort of works... however, some things kind of fall by the wayside occasionally...

Whatever may fall by the wayside your messages here always add a great deal of value.
