Baroque and Renaissance dance styles are fascinating and also very confusing. I know there's at least 3 different types of Courante, in 3/4, 6/4 and 3/2. I've been learning a "Basse-Dance" on recorder which I interpreted as quite fast and vigorous, only to learn that the phrase is a general term for slow-paced dances where the feet are kept close to the ground.... oops.

During the last two years I have been studying some Bach French Suite pieces and now have a better understanding of the tempos. I wonder how long I will remember?

I love the various dances. I have seen some performances of them and I've also wondered about the speed of some of the interpretations. However, I was reading about the Tudors last year and came across a contemporary comment which mentioned how vigorous some of the dances were. The problem with 'vigorous' though is that it's open to interpretation. It's a bit like when an alcoholic tells you they don't drink much...Their much isn't the same as someone else's much.
The recorder loves dances.
