This question has been prompted because of a Radio 3 programme known as "The Listening Service" broadcast this afternoon featuring ukulele. As far as I can tell they are not expensive to buy but I'm not sure if I fancy giving them a go.

I bought Mr Z a ukulele a few Christmases ago as a jokey present. He's played it a few times but he isn't enamoured of it. I'll ask him about it. Reasonable ones are very cheap. I checked when I bought his. I'll not play anything stringy because my right hand is a bit fragile and I can't risk putting it under that pressure I think. I now play the harp with two fingers. It sounds fine!
It's meant to be comparatively easy to play and you can sing-along!

I have rather stubby fingers that aren't particularly flexible and have never got on with guitars for that reason. I had to look up what a ukulele is like, I was thinking along the lines of a banjo, but I see it's pretty much (probably best not to say this in front of any ukulele enthusiasts) a 4-string guitar which should be easier to play because the strings are further apart. It's still not very high up the list of instruments I wish I could play.

Mr Z confirms that it's fun and easy to get started. He maintains that it isn't an easy instrument to play well. He can play the guitar - classical and folk.

I have heard it said about piano that it is easy to get stated but difficult to play well. I think all instruments are difficult and so is reading and playing music.

I play them a lot, but as an accompaniment for singing rather than a "lead" instrument. My favourite strummy-type thing these days is actually my baritone ukulele - I find it easier to play than a guitar, and less relentlessly high-pitched than the smaller ukes. Good instrument to play when knackered, which I usually am.

A feeling I know all too well!
