I'm going to revise January from Tchaikovsky's The Seasons. It somehow lifts my spirits. What are other peoples' suggestions...they can be the blues if you like?

What a lovely idea. I wonder if there is music for every month?

What a lovely idea. I wonder if there is music for every month? There is a piece for every month as Tchaikovski had been commissioned to write a new work for a monthly magazine called 'Le Nouvelliste' throughout 1873. Although he wrote twelve pieces named January through to December I seem to recall that he missed the publishing deadline for some of them so it stretched to more than a year. There are some lovely pieces in this collection.

I didn't know that - thank you! I'll have to look out for them. I've been thinking about music that is cheerful and I think some of Grieg does that for me.

"January" has a subtitle...At the Fireplace. There is a Puschkin quotation at the top of the score;
A little corner of peaceful bliss, the night dressed in darkness, the little fire is dying in the fireplace, and the candle has burned out.
Given , no doubt, that Russia is infinitely colder than we experience they must have been a tougher lot especially in the dark apart from the final glow of a fire.
