I buy quite a lot of second hand music - when I can. I invariably enjoy the comments that have been written in and quite often they are really useful but I'm not so good at writing things in myself and when I do, I write very lightly in pencil. I've come across a really interesting score recently where the pianist is apparently using some kind of colour code and has crayoned in various comments and changes. Sadly, it's rather distracting for this poor recorder player who is desperately trying to read the top line. If there was ever a separate recorder part then it has obviously long ago been lost.
Do the rest of you write in comments?

Mostly fingerings, sometimes to emphasise dynamics by entering the words soft or loud.

I do colour code music myself, but I always work from a photocopy so it doesn't matter. I write notes in pencil, then when I've internalised what I needed to remember, I rub it out, otherwise I find too many notes distracting.

Very rarely. I worked out a while ago that the more indications I write in, the less attention I pay them. Plus, there's a risk of me putting in something utterly stupid, and that being the one thing that /does/ stick in my interpretation. I've found a few of those lately.

and that being the one thing that /does/ stick in my interpretation. I've found a few of those lately. yes... the mere act of writing it down helps it stick, tenaciously in one's head. The problem with writing things in, is that it's there for all to see in the future. I once got hold of a copy of a very learned tome annotated by someone I knew when he was a student and it was hilarious! I remember the annotations better than I remember the book and they were invariably naive and wrong... My teacher used to write things in for me but I'm pretty hopeless at that kind of thing...
