ITV news is reporting that the piano was sold for £1.7 million. I was not the buyer Well that scotches my hopes of ever getting to play it.

Perhaps Freddie's piano will be a setting on electric pianos in the future. I wonder how one would be sure that it was really Freddie's piano - if it looked like every other piano made at that time then it could very easily be swapped...

Perhaps Freddie's piano will be a setting on electric pianos in the future. I wonder how one would be sure that it was really Freddie's piano - if it looked like every other piano made at that time then it could very easily be swapped... Alternatively, and this assumes it hasn't been played since Freddy passed, take a copy of all the finger prints on the keyboard and have them reproduced on dedicated fans' pianos. It reminds me of a tale which I may have told before. Sibelius had been invited to a party and sat down to play the host's piano. Upon finishing the host expressed a wish that since Sibelius had touched the piano not another person would ever be allowed to play it. 'Oh dear' said Sibelius , 'what good is an unplayed piano' so he promptly pushed the piano off a balcony and into the lake below. It must have been that period of Sibelius' life when he tended to knock back the odd alcoholic drink. I wouldn't like this to occur to Freddy's piano but wouldn't put it passed Damien Hirst to preserve it in formaldehyde.

I love the idea of the finger prints... I adore Sib's music but acknowledge he was in some ways a bit unpredictable. I love the story of the piano. I came across something where they said that he was prolific musically until he was given some kind of grant and then didn't produce anything else. That amuses me too. I hope it's true.
