I don't personally play the flute - I have tried and I bought a baroque flute a couple of years ago with the serious intention of learning to play but I found the ergonomics of the thing impossible. I came across this interesting-looking aluminium flute the other day while browsing around, and I wondered if anyone had played such a beast? I don't think being aluminium would help me very much because it's the posture that's so difficult, but I would have thought that it would be nice and light, which wouldn't do any harm. I also think the matt finish looks rather nice.

It's a wonderful instrument that. Absolutely beautiful. There was someone once who made a metal recorder. But I can't remember if it was made of aluminium or what. And I can't remember what they did about the block.

You can still get metal recorders that were made (I think indirectly) by Hopf - I actually put in a bid for one on ebay a few months ago as it wasn't expensive and I was interested (I didn't get it as I forgot all about it and was outbid at the last minute). I like the idea of a metal recorder (not sure why!). At least one person is making aluminium recorders now - John Orth. One of the things I like about these, and the flute I originally posted, was that they are light but strong, fit into a tiny box, and like all flutes don't need anything extra to make them work - by extra, I'm thinking mainly of reeds, but also strings of various sorts, etc.

I so want one of those...
Really.
Really. Really.
In fact, I need one of those. It's a work of art.

Indeed, it is absolutely lovely. No idea if he sells them - I came across them on the Recorder Home Page website but although the site includes a database of makers the only link to this one is to the deviantart page. There's an image of an assembled one here on RHP. I still like the idea of one of Bernolin's "resin" recorders, but he never has introduced a tenor. I'd much prefer this aluminium one though.
