This week I finished a piano piece that uses a melody I've been struggling with since I was 16! (It has mutated a couple of times along the way.) I have a knack for coming up with tunes that are beyond my abilities to harmonise, so this was extremely satisfying. Congratulations.

That's nice! It must feel really good... and it must be an important melody for you because I'm assuming you're older than 18... (that's the age requirement here!)

Not my composing, but I'm helping my friend sort out his score- the notation software transposed something and put stupid combinations of accidentals in it.
Exciting- when the score is cleaned up, I'll try to record the piece for him to put on his website for publicity. Got to make sure I do a proper job of it then...

Oh dear, it's all getting a bit serious... am now considering getting a new laptop so I can run notation software. Sounds like a good use of money...but who am I to talk....since Christmas Day I've been thinking about a new vinyl turntable just to play a few LPs that to my knowledge haven't been transferred to CDs and then I spotted a used so called Broadwood baby grand said to be manufactured after year 2000. Its serial number doesn't give the impression that it is a genuine John Broadwood piano so that has deflated me a little.

My laptop is from 2013, so it would not be too crazy to get a new one (realistically, I'd get an old one second hand, I never get the newest models).

This (MAC) laptop is from 2016 but I had an operating system upgrade two years ago. The batteries do not store as much charge as they once did.

I'm not a laptop person. I like the heat that comes off a desk based PC... and the way the lights dim... However, I think new shiny things are good! And you sound very enthusiastic about the direction this is taking so you definitely need a new laptop!

In my case it would have to be a laptop as I have to be able to plug it into the electric piano, as well as move it around

I don't like wireless either... I did have an iPad during chemo but it went all funny and repairing it wasn't cost effective. I got all disgusted with the price of the things so I bought a Samsung instead. That is sooo wrapped up with Google - it took me a while to disentangle it and every so often it bleats about stuff but I don't use it much now. I used it mostly for doing the grocery shopping. However, the signal here is appalling so I prefer to be plugged into that too. For someone who likes gadgets - and I do - I've ended up with some very strange quirks... Anyway, it sounds like you're really enjoying the process of composing so I hope 2024 brings lots more music!

After our recent holiday that included sampling several cafΓ©s that specialised in jazz on vinyl, Mrs P and I bought ourselves a new turntable before Christmas. Lots of fun! I think the 15-20 minute chunk of music you get actually makes you listen to it more closely, which is not a bad thing.
Oddly enough, I was reading about the vinyl revival just this morning. I thought it would only be about oldies like myself but a friend was telling me over the holiday that his grandchildren are really enthusiastic about vinyl. That must explain the prices being asked for old LPs that I glanced at briefly at a Christmas market - they were staggering considering it was stuff you probably couldn't have given away a few years ago.

It'll be unplayable and might be unlistenable, but as I told my composer friend, I only do it for myself. Basically I need to come up with some sort of harmonic framework, as what I did in the past was throw random shapes on the keyboard and hope it stuck.

I have kept to my new year's resolution. I have acquired Dorico, which on my iPad works very well. I have transcribed a song that I wrote as a composition project in university, for piano.
And I am still working with my composer friend, I have transcribed a couple of things, am practising them for recording, and have commissioned a few more.
