And that elastic idea would work for all of those other music books that totally misunderstand their purpose in life is not to stay closed! Thanks lafa! I'm going to add some elastic to my music stand!

One of my (many) grumbles is music books that won't stay open - why on earth don't publishers ring bind them? I bought one of these binding machines and although it's a bit of a hassle, I've chopped up quite a few books I use regularly, as well as used it to bind books I've bought in digital form, and it's been very useful. They seem to have increased in price a lot though, I paid about €40 for one and learned to use it via a review that said the machine had been bought for about $25.
The rod and elastic system looks a lot simpler and less expensive though!

I‘ve never tried it without a board behind the book though. Let me know how it goes if you try it. Two of my organ hymn books, both of which are much broader than tall, stay open without much fuss, or clamps work on them if the tune I‘m playing is near the front or back of the book.

I will. I have various types of clamps for some of the crafts I do but I don't really want to use them in my study. I have a fatal fascination for those clamps and on occasion have stuck them on a finger to find out how clampy they are... and the fascination never ever wears off even after the bruise has gone... so I prefer them not to be within range to tempt me...

Ordered some quite wide elastic to try on my music stand! I'll report back!

I found a site that sold piano accessories - I was really puzzled as to what those could be but it included special mats to protect the piano from underfloor heating, a cover (presumably to keep the dust off) and a piano clock. I was seriously intrigued by the piano clock; I wondered what one would do with it... until I realised it was a clock in the shape of a piano!

I'd never be able to use a cover, too many things on top of the piano! I suppose if you know you're not going to play it for weeks on end, but I can't imagine using a cover if you're playing the piano daily, or even regularly.
I've got a round clock (with hands) with the circle of fifths going round it. I've never seen one in the shape of a piano, which I suppose is a digital clock.

That sounds great! What is the actual progression? - C at 12, G at 1, etc up to F at 11? Or something different?

That's a nice clock for a music room... and I think I know someone who might like that! And who has a birthday soonish. Thank you evergreen! Problem solved and ahead of schedule!
