OK re the DR-05X. Getting stuff off the recorder has been a little more challenging on Linux than I thought it might be. So far, I haven't managed to get the computer to recognise the card. Mr Z had a go as well as he thinks at some stage he must have solved this problem. However, we finally plugged it into the input socket and fed it through to Audacity. I'm going to have to play around to find the optimum recording volume so that this works well. I was hoping that Linux would read the card and that would be that but so far that hasn't happened.
I'll play about some more in due course and report back for anyone who is interested. I'm assuming on the Mac or Windows, it would all be seamless.

keff - Thanks! That looks really useful. I'd agree about the advice BTW! The manual is very basic. I have to say I'm pleased with what I've done with the recording so far. It's been interesting to listen to my playing. It isn't worse than I was expecting which is reassuring. I haven't really played at all seriously or constructively for many, many months. So, it's been useful from that perspective.

Actually, that's very useful and very reassuring! Thanks again!
If anyone is on Linux and struggling with getting the files off the recorder then you can of course just remove the card and stick it into a card reader! That works perfectly. I wanted to avoid that if I could because those cards are so weensy!

All I have is a Zoom H2N. I do not get on at all well with recording technology, and that thing basically does all the work for me.

I haven't used the Tascam for so long I'd forgotten how it worked so a lot of messing about. I 'recorded' a one-off piece which was all leapy and I thought it might be nice for 29th... It went really well. I was smug. Then I tried playing back and realized I hadn't actually recorded it... sigh... I did another take and it was all ghastly and useless... I began to wonder if the non-recoded one was basking under the halo effect...

Commiserations Zi. What is the significance of the 29th?

Commiserations Zi. What is the significance of the 29th? Leap year! 29th Feb... hence the 'leapy' music... I don't mind fiddling with things. I don't even mind that I appear to have forgotten how it worked! The quality of the recording is really good but I do wonder if I should have chosen something more Linux friendly...

Leap year! 29th Feb... hence the 'leapy' music... I was fixated on January! I had been fixated on the 29th Feb earlier this morning when the thought came to me that we have to work an extra day for the same pay in February...then I remembered I was retired.

I've just got my recording equipment out again. I can just about figure out to witch it on so that it actually records but the little card thing is teeny. I've got a USB adapter for it as it won't fit into the Kingston card reader even though there's a slot. There's an overhang (lip) round it which means you can't fit it into the slot easily. I can't get Linux to read directly from the Tascam either... I guess I'll have to have another go. We did get it to read somehow last time but I've forgotten what we did...
I'd forgotten just how awkward making recordings actually is. Audacity is now installed (again) which is a step forward. This was a new machine and I then wiped Ubuntu and replaced with Mint (also Linux) because I decided Ubuntu was getting too parental...

I'm extremely good at replacing OS. If there were exams in it then I'd be right at the top with a distinction. I've had a lot of practice... So, I just do it... I think Mint is supposed to have taken a snapshot so it can restore if things go wrong but I'm a bit hazy about that and I don't bother with backups anyway. There's nothing precious. If this failed then I'd use it as an excuse to try something else.

I used Mint for a while, it was quite nice that it mostly "just worked" because it had all the codecs just installed, unlike Debian. But, Mint no longer bundles KDE and I came to like Plasma. Ubuntu has def become irritating about how some things are inflicted on you, eg Firefox as a flatpack or something, can't remember what.
As I probably have said, I finally, after many stubborn years, bailed out a few months ago and bought a Mac, and I'm quite pleased with it so far. Of course, some swings and roundabouts (I deeply miss the old one-click copy and paste of X11) but mostly good. I have not tried recording yet, planning to do so soon. I was using Ardour on Debian, and it will run on a Mac but only if I pay for a new license as the old one only works on a Linux box, so I'll probably switch to Garage Band is it's free and there's lots of online help stuff for it - yet another new thing to have to learn though, and I don't really have much time at the moment.
Just a brief passing rant (why waste an opportunity???) I've always thought Linux could be great if only there could be more co-operation and fewer choices. I'm all for choice, I love it that there is a range of desktops you can use for example, but do there need to be so many? I've just checked and Distrowatch lists 53 different desktops - the amount of effort that, dare I say, is wasted on supporting that lot seems absurd.
