Believe it was Rach 2nd piano concerto with VW Lark Ascending runner up. I wasn't tuned in at the time but there is a full list on the Classic FM website.

The linky is here: Hall of FameChristopher Tim figures a few times - nice to see. And a number of modern (and living) composers which is very nice to see. I wonder if anyone has analysed much but from a quick glance, the piano does very well. There's a clarinet concerto (Mozart) at no. 15 - used in Out of Africa which may account for the popularity but I haven't found any recorder! Sibelius figures a little and Borodin's 'Prince Igor' comes below his 'Steppes' - I wouldn't have predicted that. Mussorgsky is 'Pictures' I'd have predicted that one. I'm never sure anyone listens to anything else! But Stravinsky's 'Firebird' and 'Rite' still get a look in...

It is refreshing that modern living composers appear at the top of the table (Debbie Wiseman, Einaudi etc) but surely Brahms deserves an entry higher than 150ish. I turned Classic FM off years ago when they insisted on filling programmes with so called 'smooth classics' at times I was able to listen. I suppose their Hall of Fame just reflects their current playlist.

That's an interesting thought. I wondered how far the votes represent what is being served up on Classic FM. I don't listen to radio. I don't watch TV - very occasionally I happen to pass by something Mr Z is watching. So, I really wouldn't like to say what the vote is reflecting. What are 'smooth classics'? It sounds like it's classics without the lumpy bits and if that's so then Stravinsky and Mussorgsky would have a hard time being included in that!

As far as I can recall "smooth classics' were adagios etc, pieces at the slower end of the spectrum. The idea was probably to send people to sleep, then wake them up in the adverts. There are many beautiful slow movements but just not my taste to link many of them together. In my opinion serious music stimulates more than it relaxes.

I haven't had a chance to look at this but some of the placings do sound quite interesting. I presume there is some sort of symbiotic relationship between the CFM playlist and what people vote for, so each reinforces the other. Smooth classics sounds dire - I think I'd switch that off out of pure unadulterated snobbery!
